Humans were designed to breathe through their nose. Not doing so can affect our health and overall wellbeing. See below the benefits of breathing. I am an Oxygen Advantage instructor. I use the techniques of this course and others to improve your nasal breathing.
They are many advantages to breathe through the nose. It can also improve our health.
The role of the nose in breathing
Nasal breathing is generally considered better than mouth breathing for several reasons:
· Humidification: The nasal passages are lined with a mucous membrane that helps to humidify the air we breathe in. This helps to prevent dryness in the throat and lungs, which can lead to irritation and inflammation.
· Filtration: The nasal passages also act as a natural air filter, trapping pollutants, allergens, and other particles before they reach the lungs. This helps to reduce the risk of respiratory infections and allergies.
· Warms up the air: The nasal passages also help to warm up the air we breathe in, bringing it closer to body temperature. This can help to reduce the risk of bronchospasm, a condition where the airways constrict in response to cold air.
· Nitric oxide production: Nasal breathing also increases the production of nitric oxide, a gas that helps to dilate blood vessels, improve oxygen uptake, and increase blood flow to the lungs.
In contrast, mouth breathing bypasses these natural mechanisms of the nasal passages, leading to a greater risk of respiratory problems, such as snoring, sleep apnea, and asthma. Mouth breathing can also lead to dryness in the mouth and throat, bad breath, and dental problems. Therefore, it is generally recommended to breathe through your nose as much as possible.
The Health benefits
Nasal breathing offers several health benefits, including:
· Improved oxygenation: Nasal breathing helps to improve oxygen uptake in the lungs by increasing the concentration of nitric oxide in the blood. Nitric oxide is a gas that helps to dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to the body's tissues and organs.
· Reduced inflammation: Nasal breathing can help to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, sinuses, and lungs, reducing the risk of respiratory infections, allergies, and asthma.
· Improved sleep quality: Nasal breathing can help to improve sleep quality by reducing snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person stops breathing periodically during sleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue, headaches, and other health problems.
· Reduced stress and anxiety: Nasal breathing is a key component of many relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises. These techniques can help to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improve overall well-being.
· Better oral health: Nasal breathing can also help to improve oral health by promoting saliva production and reducing the risk of dry mouth and dental problems associated with mouth breathing.
Overall, nasal breathing is a natural and effective way to improve many aspects of our health, from respiratory function to sleep quality, stress reduction, and oral health.
